Dong-ni is a small place east of Taebaek, at the high point on the railway line. There's a train station here, and you can catch trains going north coming from both lines. There's a couple yeogwans in this town, and a coal mine. From here the northbound train embarks on a long complex series of switchbacks to get into the valley below.
