Jeollabuk-do (전라북도 - 全羅北道), known as North Jeolla province in English, is located on the southwestern corner. It was originally joined with Jeollanam-do as the one province, but became its own entity in 1896. It has a population of 1,890,669 and covers an area of 8,043 km² . Jeollabuk-do is comprised of 6 cities (si: 시 - 市) and 8 counties (gun: 군 - 郡). Jeonju is Jeollabuk-do's capital and largest city.

Jeonju is home to the International Film Festival in Korea, held in April. The downtown area boasts a staggering number of movie theaters.

Jeollabuk-do is also the center of the Korean paper-making industry. Traditional Korean paper is prized both within the country and abroad (particularly Japan).
