Rice cake can be divided into several kinds of categories. There's plain and fancy to start with:

Fancy: this kind is made for wedding and such, can cost up to 100,000 won. See some from Rice Cake Street in Daegu, [here]

Plain:

  • Chapssarddeok This is ddeok made from glutenous rice. It comes in a multiplicity of forms. See some of them [here]
  • Ddeokbokki ddeok These are thin rods of rice cake. Nowadays it is increasingly made from wheat rather than rice. If it's yellow rather than white, it's made from wheat. Some has both wheat and rice mixed.
  • Ddeokguk ddeok This is the white ddeok found in ddeokguk (Rice cake soup)
  • Ka rae ddeok This is the long thick rod of rice cake - when sliced diagonally it makes ddeokguk ddeok.

Ssuk, or mugwort, is often added to various types of ddeok and gives it a green color.
