Contrary to the Lonely Planet Korea guidebook, there are hotels near the train station, at least two of them. You'll see them if you are there.

There are several in the downtown area. Here are two: Donhojang, across from the taxi stand at the south end of the market. Comfortable rooms for 30,000 won/night as of 9/05. Daewangjang, a block and a half west of the bridge from the train station, on the north side of the street. Rooms for 25,000 won/night. There's another hotel just west of the bridge and yet another stuck in back of buildings to the north of the bridge road. You'll see it from the bridge and perhaps you can find it....
